Project Context:

SOLVE FOR SUSTAINABILITY
This project was born as a result of a Global Hackathon. The theme was AI for Sustainability. They also provided us with different datasets which we could use to create something out of nothing.

As I researched into sustainability problems, I came across a Non-Profit Organization called X Prize. They had a detailed list of problems looking for different solutions. One of them was bringing energy to off-grid communities.

As I looked over the datasets, I saw that we had one Tanzania’s environmental metrics and we crossed that one with a dataset that provided the number of watts given from different reusable energy sources.

EnergAI users would be sustainability experts that work with bringing energy to rural areas and communities.

ENERGY ACCESS FOR EVERYONE, ANYWHERE
I formed a team of four co-workers and worked for two days on this idea.

EnergAI is a smart sustainability consultant that suggests personalized solutions to bring energy to off-grid communities by making the most out of their individual environments.
Our goal was simple: Create a solution using AI that would bring off-grid communities feasible renewable energy access.

We had two days to develop the idea and have a working model. As the hackathon moved forward, we started running tests and adding new information to our datasets. We ended up with our solution: EnergAI 

The model takes into account certain variables that could give energy access like: daylight hours, amount of rain, wind force, etc. It also uses location, population and nearby towns to recommend the right type of renewable energy source(s) that could give you the most optimal energy use.
EnergAI’s key features are:
Decisions to save energy by supplying it directly from the source when possible
Prepared for times when the conditions of your surroundings aren’t ideal
Guides the user to save reusable resources like water or bio-waste
AI model is adaptable to off-grid rural areas, communities, and cities
WHAT HAPPENED & WHAT I LEARNED
EnergAI went on to the next round and competed with 9 other projects from around the globe. We ended up in the top 5 finalists. This hackathon was special to me because I led the team and solution towards a great outcome.

We received very good feedback and recognition across the company.

EnergAI was created for a bigger purpose. I learned how to read and differentiate datasets, I got a first-hand look at playing around with AI models and I had a blast with my co-workers for two days.  

Reflecting on EnergAI, I think I was subconsciously inspired by my love for the cartoon Captain Planet and his team of heroes where each one played an important role. That’s what my team felt like, and I was very proud to lead them.
